Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Gelco Damper Repair: The Houston Owner’s Guide

Gelco damper repair in Houston typically runs $340 – $680 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the damper plate, the cable assembly, or the entire top-mount unit. We stock Gelco-compatible repair parts on our trucks, so most jobs are completed the same visit we diagnose the problem. The way most Houston homeowners discover a failed Gelco damper is simple: the handle or chain suddenly goes slack, or they notice drafts and a whistling sound from the fireplace even when it’s fully closed.

Gelco builds top-sealing dampers with a cast aluminum frame and a spring-loaded lid. The design is good, but the components live in the worst spot on your chimney: exposed to Houston rain, Gulf Coast humidity, and whatever creosote the last few burn seasons left behind. Danny Cortes has pulled apart enough of these units across Houston to know that the part itself rarely fails all at once. It’s usually one small component wearing out, and the whole thing stops working correctly.

Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco’s damper line splits into two families: the standard top-mount dampers with cable control, and the newer energy-top models with a tighter seal and different mounting brackets. If you have a lever or pull chain next to your firebox, you likely have a Gelco top-mount damper. If there’s a spring-loaded handle that mounts to the firebox wall, that’s the energy-top series, and it uses a different cable length and mounting plate than the standard model.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha most homeowners hit: the damper lid size is not universal. Gelco lids come in dimensions matched to the inside flue tile measurement, not the outside chimney width. So before ordering any part, we measure the flue tile opening directly, usually 13″x13″, 13″x18″, or a custom size on older Houston homes, especially near Rice Military or the Heights, where flue dimensions can vary from any modern spec. The cable length matters too. A cable that’s too short won’t open fully; one that’s too long binds in the guide tube and eventually kinks.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question: for Gelco specifically, we prefer OEM or direct-equivalent parts when replacing the spring assembly and lid, because the tension spec is calibrated to that exact lid weight. Aftermarket cables and handle kits work fine as replacements, and honestly they’re what we use for most routine failures, since the originals wear through the sheath at the point where they bend into the firebox. What we don’t do is mix a mismatched spring with a heavier lid. That’s how you create a damper that slams shut or won’t stay open, and then you’re paying for the same repair twice.

Signs Your Gelco Damper Repair Is Failing

  • Handle or chain pulls with no resistance. This almost always means the cable has snapped inside the conduit or slipped from the damper arm. The lid is either stuck open, which lets Houston humidity and mosquitoes into your flue, or stuck closed, which makes the fireplace unusable.
  • You hear a metallic rattle when the wind picks up. The spring that holds the lid closed has lost tension, and the lid is fluttering against the frame. Over time this wears the pivot points and the lid can crack at the hinge.
  • Cold air pours down the chimney in winter, even with the damper “closed.” The gasket material on the underside of the Gelco lid has compressed or worn away. This is especially common after a few Houston summers, when attic heat and chimney exposure bake the gasket brittle.
  • The damper lid won’t stay latched in the closed position. The latch mechanism has rusted or the cable guide tube has shifted. We see this on fireplaces near the coast, where salt air accelerates the rust on any exposed steel hardware.
  • You smell burnt wood or ash in the room days after a fire. If the damper doesn’t seal properly when closed, smoke residue odors drift back down the flue whenever the air pressure drops inside the house, which happens constantly with Houston’s variable weather.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Gelco damper work in Houston, expect these installed ranges:

  • Cable and handle replacement: $340 – $420. This covers the parts, removing the old cable, running the new one through the guide tube, and setting the tension correctly.
  • Lid and spring assembly replacement: $480 – $560. We remove the old lid, confirm the frame is still sound, and install a new lid with matched spring and gasket.
  • Complete damper system replacement: $560 – $680. Includes new lid, cable, handle, and mounting hardware, usually needed when the original frame has corroded or the hinge points are wallowed out.

Every one of these prices is a written number you get before we start. No vague “we’ll see what it takes” talk. If Danny’s crew finds something else while the damper is out, like a cracked flue tile or a deteriorating crown, we stop and show you photos, then give you a second written price. You decide, and there’s no pressure to move forward that day. The work is backed by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the damper doesn’t operate correctly, we come back and make it right.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check one thing yourself: with the fireplace cold, look up the flue with a flashlight and note whether the damper lid is fully closed and seated flat. That’s the easy diagnostic. What you should not do is climb onto your roof and start unbolting a damper frame that’s been exposed to Houston weather for a decade. Top-mount dampers sit right at the crown, and the assembly includes a spring under genuine tension. If the mounting bolts have rusted, the whole unit can shift while you’re working on it, and a fall from a wet chimney crown is a life-changing injury. We say that not to scare anyone, but because we’ve seen what a loose damper lid can do in a strong gust.

The other reason we recommend calling us: diagnosing the actual failure point takes experience. Is it the cable, the spring, the gasket, or the frame? Replace the wrong part and the damper still doesn’t work right, but you won’t know that until the next cold front. We tell you what we found before we touch a thing. Call (254) 978-7413 and we’ll come look, measure, and give you a straight answer.
