Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Famco Chimney Cap Installation: The Houston Owner’s Guide
A Famco chimney cap installation in Houston typically runs $385 to $620 installed, including the cap itself, mounting hardware, any needed adapter work, and our labor. Most homes we visit have a cap that’s rusted through at the mesh or blown clean off during a Gulf Coast storm. We stock the common Famco sizes on the truck and can usually complete a swap the same day we’re on site.
The way most Houston homeowners find us is simple: they look up after a storm, or they hear something scratching in the flue, and realize the cap that’s supposed to be there is bent, missing, or hanging by one bracket. Others notice rain dripping into the firebox for the first time. The cap is a small part with a big job, and when it fails, everything downstream gets wet.
Which Famco Models This Applies To
We install and replace the full Famco chimney cap line: the standard stainless steel caps (SC series), the copper and stainless decorative caps, the multi-flue versions, and the wind-resistant models that use a band-clamp mount instead of through-bolts. The single most common Famco cap we see in Houston is the SC square-base model sized for 8×8 or 13×13 flue tiles, but we also handle the round-base versions you’ll find on older brick chimneys in neighborhoods like Independence Heights and Eastwood.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most owners don’t know: Famco caps mount differently depending on the flue shape. Square clay tile flues get a cap with a flat base plate and corner bolts or a pressure-band. Round metal flues get a slip-in base with a friction fit. If someone slaps the wrong base style onto your flue, it’ll rattle loose within a season or two. Before we quote anything, we confirm the flue’s inside and outside measurements, the tile shape, and whether there’s an existing mounting band that can be reused. If you have the old cap, a photo of the label helps; if not, we match by measurement. Aftermarket equivalents exist, but for a part this exposed to Houston humidity and salt air from the coast, we recommend replacing a Famco with a Famco. The stainless grade and mesh gauge are just more predictable.
Kindling Chimney Houston is an independent service provider. We’re not affiliated with Famco, but we choose to stock and install their caps because we see how they hold up compared to the off-brand options that come through this market.

Signs Your Famco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Visible rust, especially on the mesh screen. This almost always starts at the spot where the mesh is spot-welded to the frame. Houston’s humidity works on those welds year-round, and once the galvanized coating goes, the mesh can rust out in as little as three or four years.
- Water in the firebox after rain. A compromised cap lets water run straight down the flue. You’ll see dampness, staining, or a slight musty smell in the firebox. This is worth catching early because that same water is also soaking your flue liner.
- Bird, squirrel, or raccoon sounds coming from the chimney. Once the mesh tears or the cap shifts, animals get in. We’ve pulled a surprising number of nest materials out of flues where the cap was still sitting there looking fine from the ground.
- Creosote buildup on the cap’s underside you can see from a ladder or roof line. A draft-restricted cap doesn’t vent properly, and creosote condenses on the metal. This is a sign the cap is either clogged or the mesh has warped tight.
- The cap is shifted, tilted, or missing a fastener. High winds from spring fronts and late-summer storms move these. Once one corner lifts, vibration works the other fasteners loose. A tilted cap is a future airborne cap.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For most standard Famco chimney cap installations in Houston, you’re looking at $385 to $620 installed. The cap itself is usually $165 to $310 depending on size, material, and base style. Labor runs $120 to $210 because it typically involves rooftop access, removal of the old cap, and secure mounting of the new one with new hardware. Larger multi-flue caps and custom sizes push toward the top of that range and sometimes a bit beyond.
Every quote we give in Houston includes the cap, all mounting hardware, complete removal of the old unit, and sealing work where needed. You get a written price before we touch anything. No add-ons after the fact, no surprise “roof access fee” at the end. Our work is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if something we installed isn’t right, we make it right. Danny Cortes’ rule on this is simple: you see the number first, then we do the work.
DIY or Call Us?
What you can safely do from the ground: note whether the cap looks tilted, missing pieces, or heavily rusted. Take a few photos from different angles. That tells us a lot before we even get on the roof.
What we’d caution against: this is a rooftop part. Getting a clear look at a Famco cap usually means ladder work and chimney access, and we’ve seen too many DIY cap replacements where the owner discovered the flue tile was cracked or the crown needed sealing while they were up there, with no way to address it safely. We carry the full size range on the truck, so we can usually finish the replacement in one trip. Call us at (254) 978-7413 for a free estimate. A live person answers, any hour. We’ll tell you what we found before we touch a thing.
FAQs
A Famco stainless steel cap in Houston typically lasts 7 to 12 years, though coastal humidity and storm exposure can cut that shorter, and copper or painted models wear at different rates. The mesh screen fails first in most cases; the base plate and lid often have years left. If the base is sound, we can sometimes replace just the mesh section and save you the cost of a full cap.
In many cases, the answer is a partial repair rather than full replacement. A rusted mesh screen can usually be swapped while keeping the existing base and lid, which is significantly cheaper. If the base is warped or the mounting brackets have broken loose, we recommend a full replacement because a patched base will fail again quickly. Call (254) 978-7413 and we’ll give you an honest read on it.
A standard single-flue Famco cap installation takes 45 to 90 minutes from setup to cleanup. That includes removing the old cap, verifying the flue measurements, mounting the new cap, and sealing anything that needs sealing. Most Houston appointments are done in a single visit, and we leave the roof and the ground around the house cleaner than we found it.
We stock the most common Famco stainless steel cap sizes on the truck, along with mounting hardware, so in most cases we can install the same day we come out. If you have an unusual flue size or want a specific decorative finish, we order it and schedule the install once it arrives. We do not install customer-supplied caps because we can’t stand behind the fit, the mounting, or the fabrication quality of a part we didn’t verify ourselves. Call (254) 978-7413 and tell us your flue dimensions, or send a photo of the existing cap.
Once the cap is replaced, we walk you through exactly what we installed, why we chose it, and what to watch for down the road. You get a written price before any work starts, and a photo of the finished clean-up before we leave. That’s the Cedarwell Care Promise, on every job.
