Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation: The Houston Owner’s Guide
We stock and install DuraFlex-compatible chimney caps across Houston, with most cap replacements running between $180 and $420 installed depending on flue size and roof access. The typical swap takes under an hour once we’re on the roof, and our trucks carry the common DuraFlex sizes so we can usually handle it on the first visit. Most Houston homeowners discover their cap has failed the hard way: after a hard rain, they hear dripping inside the firebox, or they spot rust flakes at the base of the chimney after a windy week. Water that gets past a failed cap doesn’t just sit there – it works its way into the flue liner, the smoke shelf, and eventually the masonry itself. In Houston’s climate, where we get heavy spring downpours followed by humid summers that slow everything down, a compromised cap turns into a slow, steady leak that most people don’t notice until the damp smell starts or the damper gets stiff.
Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To
DuraFlex makes a few different cap configurations, and matching the right one matters more than people expect. The three we see most often in Houston homes are the standard round cap for the 5.5-inch and 6-inch flex liners, the oval-to-round adapter cap for masonry flues that have been relined, and the band-clamp style cap that grips the outside of the liner directly. The fastest way to identify what you have is to check the metal data plate riveted to the cap base, or measure the inside diameter of the flue at the top – if you can safely get to it. One gotcha we run into regularly: a round DuraFlex cap will not seal correctly on an oval flue, even if the dimensions look close on a tape measure. The flare angle is different, rainwater pools at the seam, and you get rust within a year. For most Houston homes that were relined in the last 15 years, an OEM DuraFlex cap is the right call because it matches the liner’s expansion rate. Aftermarket caps work, but we’re honest with people: the cost difference is usually $30 to $60, and the OEM cap tends to hold its finish longer in Houston’s salt-adjacent humidity. We carry both on the truck and we’ll show you the difference before you buy.

Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Rust streaks on the crown or chase top. This is the earliest sign and the one most people write off as cosmetic. The cap’s galvanized or stainless shell is breaking down, and moisture is already getting under the flashing. In Houston’s humidity, that rust line usually means the cap has one to two seasons left before it starts letting water into the flue.
- Drafting problems in the firebox. When a cap gets dented, or when a Houston thunderstorm knocks a branch across it, the mesh and lid can partially close off airflow. You’ll notice the fireplace smoking back into the room on start-up, or the room smells like yesterday’s fire when the AC kicks on. That’s negative pressure pulling flue gases past a damaged cap.
- Debris inside the firebox or at the base of the damper. If the mesh screen has torn or the cap’s skirt has pulled away from the flue tile, leaves, twigs, and grackle nesting material end up inside. We see this a lot in neighborhoods with mature oaks, like West University and parts of Meyerland.
- Small animals getting in. A missing or damaged cap is an open invitation for Houston’s squirrels and chimney swifts. You’ll hear scratching or chirping, or you’ll smell something you can’t quite place. We’ve pulled nests out of flues where the cap was gone entirely.
- Water in the firebox after rain. This is the clearest sign, but by the time you see standing water, the cap has been failing for a while. The cap should be the first line of defense. If it’s missing or shifted, water is also hitting your damper assembly and the smoke shelf above it.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a standard DuraFlex round cap on a single flue, most Houston homeowners pay between $180 and $420 installed. That includes the cap itself, new stainless band clamps if the old ones show rust, removal of the old cap, and a quick check of the top few feet of the liner for damage. The price moves based on three things: whether the roof is a steep pitch or needs a taller ladder, whether the flue size is a less common one like an 8-inch oval, and whether the existing cap was sealed with masonry caulk that has to be chipped off. You’ll get the written price before we start, every time – that’s not an add-on, that’s how Danny runs every Kindling job in Houston. The cap we install carries its own manufacturer warranty, and our workmanship on the installation is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the cap we put on doesn’t hold up, we make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
There are two safe things you can check from the ground with binoculars: whether the cap is visibly missing or tilted, and whether the mesh is clogged with leaves. Anything beyond that means getting on the roof, and that’s where we’d ask you to stop and call us at (254) 978-7413. Houston roofs get slick with morning dew and algae, and a fall from even a single-story chimney can be life-changing. We also see a lot of DIY cap replacements where the homeowner used the wrong sealant – silicone caulk instead of a high-temp masonry sealant – and created a water trap at the base of the cap. Our technicians are background-checked, they show up in uniform with the right ladder and fall protection, and the work is done quietly. If the kids are asleep, we’ll keep the noise down. If the dog’s in the yard, we’ll let you know before we open the gate. We tell you what we found before we touch a thing.
FAQs
A DuraFlex chimney cap in Houston typically lasts 10 to 15 years before the mesh or the welds start to break down. The real variable here is Houston’s combination of humidity, heavy rain, and intense summer UV. Stainless caps last longer than galvanized, and caps on chimneys that face south or southwest tend to fail first because they take the full brunt of the afternoon sun. If your cap is over 12 years old and you’re seeing rust streaks, it’s time to have it looked at. Call (254) 978-7413 and we’ll give you an honest read on whether it needs replacing this season or can wait.
In most cases, it’s more cost-effective to replace a damaged DuraFlex cap than to repair it. A torn mesh screen can sometimes be re-screened, but once the cap’s shell is rusted through or the band clamp has failed, the metal is compromised and repairs become temporary patches. The cost difference between repairing and replacing is usually small enough that replacement is the better long-term call. We’ll show you the damage with photos before you make a decision.
A standard DuraFlex chimney cap installation takes about 45 to 60 minutes once the technician is on the roof. The process involves removing the old cap, cleaning any rust or old sealant from the flue top, fitting the new cap, and securing it with stainless clamps. If the roof is steep or the flue needs additional prep, it can run longer. Most Houston customers schedule this as a single visit with no need to wait around.
Yes, our trucks carry the most common DuraFlex round cap sizes for 5.5-inch and 6-inch liners, along with the band clamps and the oval-to-round adapter caps we see on relined Houston chimneys. If you need a less common size, we can typically have it the next day. When you call (254) 978-7413, we’ll ask you to describe what you see and we’ll let you know if it’s a same-visit job or one that needs a parts order. We also stock parts from HeatShield and Gelco for liner repairs that sometimes come to light once we’re on the roof.
If you’ve got a DuraFlex cap that’s seen better days, call us at (254) 978-7413 for a free estimate. You’ll get a straight answer on what’s wrong, a written price before any work begins, and a crew that leaves your home the way we found it – shoe covers on, floors clean, and a photo of the clean-up before we pull away.
