Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Houston Owner’s Guide
If you have a Gelco chimney cap that’s rusted through, lifted off in a storm, or started letting rain into your firebox, we stock Gelco-compatible caps and install them across Houston, typically for $340 – $620 including parts, labor, and a written price before we start. Most Gelco cap replacements in the Houston area are done in a single visit, and yes, we carry the common sizes on the truck. Homeowners usually catch the problem one of two ways: water pooling near the fireplace after a heavy Gulf rain, or a cap that looks warped and tired from the top of the driveway.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco makes a handful of cap lines that show up repeatedly on Houston chimneys, and the fit depends on two measurements: the outside dimensions of your flue tile and whether you have a single-flue or multi-flue setup. The Gelco LC (loop-cap) and TC (top-cap) series are the ones we pull off the truck most often; they’re built for standard 8×8, 8×13, and 13×13 flue tiles, and they fasten with a band clamp rather than drilled brackets on most models. That matters in Houston because drilled stainless brackets and our thunderstorms make a lousy combination over time. One gotcha: if you have a Gelco cap with a mesh screen, check the mesh gauge before ordering a replacement. The older LC-series used a lighter screen that squirrels in neighborhoods like Meyerland and Bellaire could chew through in a season; the newer stock from Gelco runs heavier, and it’s worth specifying when we order. You can usually read the model number on a stamped plate under the top lid, but if that plate is gone, we measure on arrival and match it same-day from our truck stock or order it straight from Gelco’s Houston distribution channel.
OEM versus aftermarket for Gelco is an easy call: the OEM cap’s base plate is formed to accept the clamp channel on the Gelco flange, and universal aftermarket caps rarely sit flush without a retrofit. We’ve seen universal caps rattle loose on older masonry chimneys near Rice Military within two years, where a Gelco cap with the proper channel holds true. That said, a quality stainless aftermarket cap from a brand we trust, like Olympia, sometimes makes sense on odd-size flue tile where Gelco doesn’t run that dimension. We’ll tell you what we found before we touch a thing, and we’ll show you both options with honest prices.
Styles & brands we work with

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Rainwater around the firebox or damper after a storm. On Gelco caps in Houston, this most often means the pan lip has warped or separated from the flue tile. Gulf humidity plus a decade of heat cycling does that; it’s rarely the tile itself.
- A cap that sits tilted or spins when touched from the roof. The stainless clamp band on Gelco TC-series caps can work loose after a high-wind event. We’ve seen caps leaning a full twenty degrees after a summer microburst, still attached but no longer sealing the flue opening.
- Rust trails or pitting on the cap lid, especially on the windward side. Galvanized Gelco caps, which were more common ten or fifteen years ago, degrade faster in Houston’s salt-tinged air. Stainless lasts, but even it will show corrosion pitting if the cap was installed against incompatible metal flashing.
- Squirrel or raccoon noise above the firebox. If a mesh panel has torn or the cap has shifted, a determined Houston raccoon will find the gap. We get this call often in spring, and the fix usually includes a heavier mesh panel than the original.
- Sudden draft change or a sharper smoke smell in the living room. A failing cap changes the pressure story at the top of the flue. When the cap can’t hold a stable draft, the fireplace pulls differently, and cook smoke or cold air starts behaving strangely.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In the Houston market, a standard Gelco cap installation runs $340 – $620 installed, with the cap itself accounting for $190 – $410 depending on size, series, and whether you’re matching stainless or galvanized. What shifts the number toward the higher end: multi-flue caps for two adjacent flues, odd flue dimensions that aren’t in regular rotation, or a cap that requires scaffold rather than ladder access on a steep pitch. Every quote includes sealing the flue joint, testing the clamp band, an inspection photo of the finished install, and clean-up that leaves your floors and lawn untouched. We hand you a written price before any work starts, and the whole job is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if anything about that cap is wrong in the first year, we come back and make it right. No fine print, no service-charge revision.
DIY or Call Us?
Replacing a chimney cap looks simple from the ground, but the ladder work and the roof surface make it the wrong place to improvise. You can safely check from ground level whether the cap is visibly tilted, rusted, or missing mesh, and you can snap a photo with your phone to send us. What we’d ask you not to do is climb up after it, especially on a Houston roof after rain or with a cap that’s already loose. A cap that shifts while you remove it becomes a falling metal object, and the roof damage from a misstep on architectural shingles costs a lot more than our install. We inspect from a tripod ladder or scaffold set on a stable surface, and our techs carry fall protection as standard. If you’re uncertain whether your Gelco cap is still sound, call (254) 978-7413 and we’ll assess it from the ground with you before anyone climbs.
FAQs
A stainless Gelco cap in the Houston climate typically runs 12 – 18 years, where a galvanized cap may start showing real corrosion at 8 – 10 years thanks to humidity and salt-tingled air near the coast. It’s not a part with a fixed life; it’s a part whose life depends on material, drainage, and the installation. Call (254) 978-7413 if you want an honest read on what’s on your chimney today, and we’ll give you a straight lifespan estimate for the cap you actually have.
Sometimes, and it comes down to where the failure is. A torn mesh panel or a rusted spark screen on an otherwise solid lid is a justifiable repair, and we do exactly that when the base plate and clamp are still good. A rusted-through base plate or a clamp channel that’s separated at the weld is not; on a cap that old you’re buying a new unit regardless. We’ll show you the damage before we touch it, so you’re never paying for a replacement you didn’t need to see justified.
Most single-flue Gelco cap swaps take under an hour once the ladder is set. Multi-flue or oddly sized caps add another thirty to forty-five minutes, plus whatever time it takes to stage a safe ladder position on your roofline. We schedule for the job, not for a rushed appointment window, so you’ll know exactly how long we expect to be there before we arrive. For a free estimate, call (254) 978-7413 and we’ll give you an honest time and price.
Yes. We keep the common Gelco LC and TC series sizes on our service truck, which covers most single-flue masonry chimneys across Houston. If your measurements fall outside that, we order from Gelco’s Houston distribution and typically install within a week. Same-weekavailability is common in summer; in winter storm season, orders take a few extra days. Call (254) 978-7413 and we’ll search our truck stock for your size while you’re on the phone.
