Gelco Chimney Inspection in Houston: What to Know First
We provide independent Gelco chimney inspection in Houston, typically completing Level 1 and Level 2 inspections within the same week you call. A standard visual inspection on a Gelco prefabricated fireplace runs between $189 and $289, and a camera inspection of the flue adds $150 to $250, depending on access and height. If you own a Gelco fireplace in the Houston area and want an honest read on what that system needs – before any brush touches it – call (254) 978-7413 for a free estimate.
This page is for homeowners in Houston neighborhoods like Rice Military, Meyerland, the Heights, and Clear Lake who specifically have Gelco prefabricated fireplaces. Gelco products are common in Houston homes built from the late 1980s through the mid-2000s, and they age in particular ways in our humidity. As an independent Gelco service provider, we’re not authorized by or affiliated with Gelco, which means we have no incentive to sell you parts you don’t need. We inspect, we show you the camera footage, and we tell you plainly what’s safe and what can wait.
How Gelco Products Fail – and How We Fix Them
Gelco fireplaces are factory-built prefab systems, not masonry chimneys, and that matters for inspection. The failure modes we see in Houston are specific and repeatable. Here’s what we look for on every Gelco job:
- Refractory panel cracking in Gelco Warm Majic and Heatilator-style models. Gelco used cast refractory panels that don’t love Houston’s humidity swings. When the fireplace heats and cools against a damp exterior wall, hairline cracks form. Those cracks let heat reach the metal firebox behind the panel. We document the crack width and depth with the camera, and if the panel is still structurally sound, we often treat it with HeatShield rather than replacing it, which saves families real money. If a panel has shifted more than a quarter inch, replacement is the honest call.
- Chase top and galvanized cap rust on Gelco units. This is the number one silent problem on Gelco fireplaces in Houston. The chase top sits flat on a framed wood chase, and Houston rain pools in the corners. Factory Gelco chase tops were often thin galvanized steel. Once rust opens a pinhole, water follows the flue pipe down and soaks the insulation and framing. We replace rusted chase tops with stainless and check the flue pipe joint for rust staining at the same time.
- Flue pipe warping on Gelco direct-vent units. Gelco direct-vent systems used double-wall pipe that can warp if the fireplace was ever run with a missing or cracked refractory panel. The inner pipe deforms, and the venting clearance shifts. We catch this during camera inspection before it becomes a carbon monoxide concern, and we quote a replacement using aftermarket pipe that carries the same UL listing as the original, which keeps the fireplace warranty-safe.
- Damper clamp back-feed on masonry-adjacent Gelco installs. Some Houston homes we inspect near Rice Military and the Heights have Gelco fireplaces installed into older masonry chimneys. Those installs often omitted the damper clamp that prevents the fireplace damper from fully closing. The result is warm, humid Houston air pulling back down the flue all summer, which rusts the Gelco firebox from the inside. We check for the clamp on every mixed-system inspection and install one when it’s missing.
- Gas log retrofit issues on Gelco wood-burning boxes. A lot of Houston families converted Gelco wood fireplaces to gas logs in the late 2000s. In some of those conversions, the contractor left the original refractory panels in place, which is fine, but they also removed the top refractory panel and never sealed the smoke shelf. That gap lets hot gas escape into the chase. We see this often enough that it’s now a standard checkpoint on every Gelco inspection, and the fix is a custom-cut panel that fits the original Gelco dimensions.

Our Gelco Chimney Inspection Process
- 1
You call, a person answers. We book the inspection at a time that works for your family. A live person answers at (254) 978-7413, day or night, no voicemail tree.
- 2
The tech arrives and protects the house first. Shoe covers go on before the front door closes, and drop cloths go down from the entry to the fireplace. Nothing is moved without asking you first. This is our Cedarwell Care Promise and it’s not optional for our crew.
- 3
We inspect before we touch anything. Danny Cortes built our inspection order around a simple rule: “We tell you what we found before we touch a thing.” The tech examines the firebox, refractory panels, flue pipe, chase top, damper, and exterior venting. If it’s a Level 2 inspection, the camera goes in and we record everything.
- 4
We show you the footage. You don’t take our word for a liner crack or panel shift. You see it on the camera screen while we explain what it means. Nothing gets recommended that you can’t see for yourself.
- 5
Written price for any work, before we do it. If the inspection turns up repair needs, you get a written quote at the inspection, not a call-back pitch later. OEM Gelco parts get quoted alongside quality aftermarket options where they exist, so you decide with full information.

AfterWhat Gelco Chimney Inspection Costs in Houston
Here’s the honest money part. In Houston, a Level 1 Gelco inspection, which is the visual check we do when nothing has changed and the fireplace has been used normally, runs between $189 and $289. A Level 2 inspection with camera, which you’ll want if you’ve had a house fire nearby, bought or sold the home, or made any changes to the fireplace, runs between $340 and $490. A Level 3 inspection, which is what gets ordered when we have to remove part of the chimney or fireplace structure to see inside a concealed space, starts around $500 and depends entirely on what we have to open up.
The price moves based on three honest factors: the height and access of your roof or chase, whether the fireplace is on an interior or exterior wall, and how much camera documentation the inspection level requires. We never quote a price over the phone sight-unseen, and the written quote you get before any work starts is the price you pay. Call (254) 978-7413 for a free estimate.

We’re the company Houston families call when they want someone who knows exactly what a Gelco fireplace is and isn’t. Our techs have inspected Gelco units in older Houston neighborhoods from Rice Military to Clear Lake, and we know which factory weaknesses show up in which housing eras. When a Gelco repair overlaps with another brand, like a DuraFlex liner or a HeatShield patch, we use the brand that fits the job best and tell you why. Every inspection and repair is backed by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the work isn’t right, we make it right, no fine print. Every visit includes the Cedarwell Care Promise, which covers shoe covers and drop cloths, a written price before we start, and a photo of the clean-up before we leave. That’s the deal, and we put it in writing on every job.
FAQs
Gelco has gone through several corporate changes over the years, and original factory parts for many older Gelco model lines are no longer manufactured. In most Houston homes, aftermarket parts that carry the same UL listing as the original Gelco component are available and perform identically, and using them does not affect your homeowner’s insurance position. We quote both OEM and quality aftermarket options whenever both exist, with the price difference written out, so you’re never guessing. If you want to know what’s available for your specific Gelco model, call (254) 978-7413 and we’ll check before the inspection.
A Level 1 inspection covers the visible fireplace and accessible portions of the flue and chase. A Level 2 inspection extends into the attic, crawlspace, and other accessible areas around the chimney structure, including the chase top from the roof. In Houston homes with tight attic access or finished chases hidden behind drywall, we may recommend a Level 3 inspection to see what’s actually inside the chase before quoting any repair. We’ll tell you which level your situation calls for and why, in plain language, before any work begins.
Every year, same as any wood-burning or gas fireplace. Houston’s humidity is harder on prefab fireplaces than the fire itself, and the problems we find most often, chase top rust and refractory cracking, are things you won’t see from your living room. An annual inspection catches those problems while they’re cheap to fix. If you use the fireplace heavily during Houston’s rare cold snaps, stick to the annual schedule and don’t skip the camera inspection after a particularly wet summer.
It depends on the crack. Hairline cracks that haven’t shifted the panel can often be sealed with HeatShield, which is a ceramic sealant rated for fireplace use and costs less than a panel replacement. Panels that have visibly moved, crumbled at the edges, or exposed the metal firebox behind them need replacement, and we quote the panel cost plus the labor to fit it. We’ll show you the camera footage and let you see for yourself which situation you have before you spend a dollar.
The most common outcome in Houston is that a small chase top rust hole goes unnoticed, water gets into the chase, and by the time you see a stain on the ceiling below, the flue pipe and framing around it need real work. A fireplace inspection costs a few hundred dollars. A chase rebuild with new flue pipe, insulation, and chase top runs into the thousands. We won’t push you to book anything you don’t need, but we will be honest about what the camera shows. Call (254) 978-7413 for a free estimate.
