Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
HeatShield Crown Repair: The Houston Owner’s Guide
HeatShield crown repair in Houston typically runs $450 to $900 installed, depending on how much of the crown has delaminated and whether the flue chase needs prep work first. Most jobs are completed in a single visit, and we stock HeatShield joint sealant, crown coat, and mesh on the truck so there’s no second trip. The way most Houston homeowners discover this problem: they spot a water stain on the ceiling near the fireplace, call us out, and our camera shows hairline cracks across the crown that have been letting rain seep into the chase for at least a season.
Here’s what that looks like in practice. Water gets past the crown, runs down the flue, and pools at the base of the chase where it meets the roofline. The damage stacks quietly. By the time the stain shows, you’re usually looking at a crown repair plus some degree of flue tile repair or chase pan work. Which HeatShield Models This Applies To
HeatShield is a system, not a single part, and the crown repair component works across the board: HeatShield Cerfractory Sealant, HeatShield Crown Coat (white or gray), and HeatShield Reinforcing Mesh are matched to any masonry chimney crown, regardless of flue liner type. If your chimney has a poured concrete crown at the top, this is the product line that seals it.
Compatibility isn’t the gotcha here. The gotcha is coverage. HeatShield Crown Coat covers about 25 to 30 square feet per gallon depending on how porous the existing crown is. Houston’s humidity and heat cycles cause concrete to expand and contract aggressively, so crowns here tend to be more porous than in drier climates. That means we often use more product than the manufacturer’s baseline estimate, and we measure before quoting so you’re not surprised. You’ll find the HeatShield label on the bucket or the mesh roll, or in the paperwork from your original installer. If the crown was just sealed with a box-store caulk, that’s not HeatShield, and we’ll usually recommend the full treatment because whatever was there has already failed.
Styles & brands we work with

Signs Your HeatShield Crown Repair Is Failing
- Hairline cracks radiating from the flue opening. This is the most common failure we see in Houston, especially in older homes near Rice Military. The concrete crown expands in the summer heat and contracts in winter, and over 15 to 20 years that cycle widens tiny fissures until water moves through them.
- A white, chalky residue on the crown surface. That’s efflorescence, mineral salts leached out of the concrete by water movement. If you can see it from the ground, the crown has been absorbing moisture for a while.
- Spalling, or small pieces of concrete flaking off. When water gets into the crown and re-freezes during Houston’s rare but real cold snaps – yes, they happen, most recently in the January freezes – it expands and pops the surface. Eventually you’ll find little chips in the gutter or on the roof.
- Water stains on the ceiling near the fireplace, or a musty smell in the hearth room. This is the late-stage signal. Water has already made it past the crown, down the outside of the flue, and into the living space. The crown repair is now part of a bigger job.
- Dripping sounds inside the chimney during heavy rain. If you hear it, don’t wait for the stain. The water has already breached the crown and is running down the flue or the chase interior. A camera inspection will show exactly where it’s coming from before any repair quote is written.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Houston, a standard HeatShield crown repair lands between $450 and $900 installed. The range is driven by three things: the square footage of your crown, the amount of prep work the existing surface needs, and whether we’re also sealing the flue tile interior or replacing a rusted chase pan while we’re up there.
What’s included in our price: a full crown inspection with photos, cleaning and prep of the existing surface, application of HeatShield Cerfractory Sealant where cracks exceed 1/8 inch, HeatShield Reinforcing Mesh across the crown, and HeatShield Crown Coat to seal everything. We also wrap the flue tile base with flexible sealant so water can’t wick down between the tile and the concrete. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise applies: if the crown repair fails inside a year, we make it right, no fine print. And you’ll get a written price before any work starts, always.
DIY or Call Us?
What you can safely check yourself: look at the crown from a ladder (staying off the roof itself) and note any visible cracks, flaking, or chalky white patches. Take a photo. That’s genuinely useful before you call, because it helps us plan the first trip.
What goes wrong with DIY crown repair is real, and it’s not about the product. It’s about access and prep. A crown sits at the peak of the roof, often on a slope, and Houston rooflines with steep pitches are not a place to balance a bucket of sealant. If you don’t grind out the old, failed material and let the surface dry completely before applying HeatShield, the new coat peels within a season and you’ve spent $200 on materials plus a weekend to end up back where you started. We do this from proper roof anchors and a staging plank when needed, and we know the difference between a crown that’s salvageable and one that needs a full recast. Call (254) 978-7413 and we’ll tell you straight which one you’ve got, with the photo evidence in hand before you spend a dollar.
FAQs
In the Houston climate, a properly applied HeatShield crown repair lasts 10 to 15 years, sometimes longer on shaded roofs. The two factors that shorten that lifespan are direct afternoon sun beating on the crown and standing water from poor drainage. We’ll tell you during the inspection which side of that range your specific roof sits on.
Yes, in most cases. We can repair rather than recast a crown if the cracks are under about 1/4 inch wide and the concrete hasn’t begun spalling deeply. HeatShield Cerfractory Sealant fills and stabilizes, and the Crown Coat seals the whole surface. If the crown has large sections missing beyond surface flaking, a full recast with new concrete is the honest recommendation, and we’ll show you the photos to back it up.
A typical crown repair takes 3 to 5 hours on site, with most of that time going to prep work and letting the sealant set between coats. We schedule it as a single-day job in almost every case. You don’t need to be home the whole time, but we’ll walk you through the after-photos before we leave.
We keep HeatShield Cerfractory Sealant, Crown Coat, and Reinforcing Mesh on our service trucks, so we can quote, confirm, and repair in the same visit when the schedule allows. We’re an independent service provider and not affiliated with HeatShield, but we use their products because they hold up to Houston’s heat-and-humidity cycles better than generic sealants we’ve tried. We also stock DuraFlex and Gelco materials for liner and chase work that often goes hand-in-hand with crown issues. Call (254) 978-7413 for a written quote, and we’ll have it to you before any work begins.
