Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
DuraFlex Crown Repair: The Houston Owner’s Guide
DuraFlex crown repair in Houston typically runs between $385 and $720 installed, depending on crown condition and how much resurfacing the flue needs at the same time. We stock DuraFlex-compatible crown materials on our trucks, so most repair jobs are completed in a single visit. Most Houston homeowners discover the problem the same way: a rust stain running down the brick, a crumbling patch showing up after a hard rain, or an inspector flagging hairline cracks during a routine sweep. The crown is the concrete cap on top of your chimney, and when it starts letting water through, it takes a toll on everything below it.
Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To
DuraFlex crowns are sized to the flue opening, not to a single product line, which is why we see them across DuraFlex’s aluminum and stainless liner systems alike. What matters is the inside diameter of your flue tile and the crown’s overhang, typically 2 to 2.5 inches beyond the brick edge on a properly poured cap. The OEM crown wash is prefabricated to match DuraFlex top plates and rain caps, so if you’re replacing the crown you generally want the top plate and cap checked at the same time. We can tell you by phone whether your existing top plate will remount cleanly or whether it’s time to replace it. Kindling Chimney Houston is an independent service provider, not a DuraFlex distributor, which means we recommend the DuraFlex part when it’s the right fit, and a quality aftermarket equivalent when it isn’t.

Signs Your DuraFlex Crown Repair Is Failing
- Hairline or spiderweb cracks across the crown surface. Houston’s clay-heavy soil shifts with wet and dry seasons, and that movement transfers up through the chimney. A crown poured too thin or without proper control joints will crack within a few years.
- Chunks of concrete missing from the edges. The crown overhang catches the brunt of Houston thunderstorms. Once water gets into the crown edge and freezes, even briefly, it spalls the concrete outward.
- Rust stains bleeding down the brick face. This means water is getting past the crown and running down the flue or the liner connection. By the time rust shows on the brick, moisture has usually been moving for a while.
- White mineral deposits on the brick below the crown. That’s efflorescence, not a cleaning problem. It’s water carrying salts out of the masonry, and it tells you exactly where the crown is failing.
- Water in the firebox after heavy rain. If you’re seeing puddles or damp ash after a downpour, the crown is a likely entry point. So is the flashing, which we check at no extra cost whenever we’re already on the roof.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Houston, a standard DuraFlex crown repair or replacement on a single-flue chimney runs from $385 to $720 installed. A simple resurfacing with CrownCoat or a similar elastomeric sealant sits at the lower end. A full tear-out and repour with proper overhang and a drip edge sits at the upper end. The range moves with three things: whether we’re repairing or fully replacing the crown, how much of the existing crown is salvageable, and whether the flue needs attention at the same time. Every quote includes the written price before work begins, disposal of old material, and a photo of the finished crown the same day. Danny Cortes has walked more Houston roofs around Rice Military than he can count, and he’ll tell you the same thing every time: the crown that gets ignored for five years is the one that costs you a liner repair on top of it.
DIY or Call Us?
What you can safely do from the ground is tell us what you see: a crack photo, a rust line, a piece of concrete waiting in the gutter after a storm. That helps us bring the right material on the first visit. What gets risky is a homeowner on a ladder with a bucket of patching compound. Crown work is usually a two-person job on a sloped or two-story roof, and Houston roofs get slick after morning humidity. If the patch doesn’t bond properly or the crown isn’t shaped to shed water, you’ve spent a Saturday and haven’t fixed the leak. We’d rather you call us at (254) 978-7413 and let us look at it properly. We tell you what we found before we touch a thing.
FAQs
A properly poured crown in Houston should last 10 to 15 years before it needs resurfacing, and longer if the overhang and drip edge are done right. Crowns that were poured thin or without a drip edge fail in as little as 5, which is why we see so many early failures in homes around Rice Military. If your crown is under 10 years old and already cracking, it was likely mixed or poured poorly the first time. Call (254) 978-7413 and we’ll tell you what we see before we recommend any work.
Yes, more often than not. Hairline cracking with no spalling can be sealed with an elastomeric crown coat, and that’s a repair we do in a single afternoon. If the concrete is crumbling or the crown has pulled away from the flue, patching won’t hold and you’ll be back in the same spot after the next hard rain. We’ll tell you plainly which side of that line your crown falls on.
Most DuraFlex crown repairs and resurfacing jobs in Houston take three to four hours from setup to clean-up. Full tear-out and repour is a longer day, but we still schedule it as a single visit. You get a written price before any work starts, and we treat your roof and yard like our own while we’re up there.
We stock DuraFlex-compatible crown materials, top plates, and rain caps on our trucks, along with HeatShield and Gelco products for liner and firebox work. If your crown needs a full replacement, we bring what’s needed for your flue size and confirm the fit before anything is installed.
