Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
DuraFlex Fireplace Repair in Houston: What to Know First
DuraFlex fireplace repair in Houston typically runs $175 to $650 depending on what’s failing, and most jobs we complete in a single visit after a 30- to 45-minute diagnostic. We’re an independent DuraFlex service provider – not affiliated with or authorized by DuraFlex itself – which means we repair what’s actually broken instead of steering you toward a full replacement because it’s simpler for us. Danny Cortes built Kindling Chimney Houston on that exact principle: we tell you what we found before we touch a thing. If your DuraFlex fireplace is acting up – a pilot that won’t stay lit, a damper that won’t seat, a firebox showing cracks – call (254) 978-7413 and we’ll give you a written price before any work begins.
How DuraFlex Products Fail – and How We Fix Them
- DuraFlex 5-inch and 6-inch liner kinking at the offset. Houston homes with two-story fireplaces often have flue offsets where the liner makes a turn through the smoke chamber. DuraFlex’s 316L alloy handles heat well, but if the original installer over-tightened the pull at the offset, the ridge locks can separate and create a gap that dumps heat into the chase. We see this in older Cypress and Spring homes where the chase has settled. The fix is a reseat of the ridge lock and a pressure test, not a full liner pull.
- Pilot assembly fouling on DuraFlex gas inserts. DuraFlex gas fireplace inserts run hot, and in Houston’s humid months, the thermocouple and pilot tube pick up a fine sulfur film from the gas supply that makes the pilot lazy. The symptom is a pilot that lights but drops out within 30 seconds. Aftermarket thermocouples from brands like White Rodgers work, but we’ve found the OEM DuraFlex thermocouple reads flame millivoltage more steadily over time, so we quote both and let you choose.
- Damper plate warping on DuraFlex wood-burning units. The cast iron damper plate on older DuraFlex wood burners sits directly over the firebox opening and takes repeated heat cycling. In Houston, where we get damp winters followed by dry stretches, the plate can warp just enough that it won’t seat fully, which means cold air drops down the flue in summer and warm air escapes in winter. A new damper plate runs about $90 to $140 for the part, and we can usually install it the same visit.
- Firebox refractory panel cracking near the DuraFlex starter collar. This is the one that concerns us most. Where the DuraFlex liner meets the firebox, the refractory panel absorbs the thermal expansion. Houston’s humidity swings cause the mortar bed behind the panel to swell and contract, and hairline cracks start at the collar and spread. It’s rarely a structural emergency, but it should be sealed within a season. We use a high-temp refractory caulk rated for 2,000°F and tool it smooth so the repair doesn’t look like a patch job.
- DuraFlex terminator cap and top plate rust-through. Houston gets 50 inches of rain a year, and the galvanized top plate on many DuraFlex installations starts showing rust blooms around the storm collar bolts after eight to ten years. Water then tracks down the outside of the liner and into the chase, which shows up as a musty smell near the fireplace in spring. We replace the top plate with a stainless version and seal the storm collar with a high-temp silicone that holds up in Houston’s rain-heavy March and September.

Our DuraFlex Fireplace Repair Process
- 1
You call, a person answers. No phone tree, no callback that comes three days later. We’ll ask what the fireplace is doing, what model DuraFlex unit you have if you know it, and when you first noticed the problem.
- 2
We inspect before we touch anything. Danny or one of our background-checked techs arrives in uniform, puts down shoe covers and drop cloths, and does a full visual on the firebox, damper, liner, and gas connections if applicable. We photograph what we find.
- 3
You get a written price. Before a single tool comes out, you’ll see exactly what’s wrong, what we propose to fix it, and what it costs. If it can wait, we tell you it can wait. If it can’t, we explain why.
- 4
Parts decision happens with you, not for you. For DuraFlex work, we’ll often quote an OEM part and a quality aftermarket alternative with the trade-offs in plain language. You choose based on your budget and how long you plan to live in the house.
- 5
The repair and the test. We fix the problem, then run the fireplace through its cycles – pilot light, main burner, damper operation, draft – to verify everything works before we pack up.
- 6
Cleanup and photo proof. We vacuum the firebox, wipe down surfaces, and take a photo of the clean-up before we leave. Then we walk you through what we did and answer anything you want to know. Every job carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise.

AfterWhat DuraFlex Fireplace Repair Costs in Houston
| Repair Scenario | Typical Range in Houston |
|---|---|
| Pilot light replacement or thermocouple | $175 – $310 |
| Damper plate replacement | $190 – $380 |
| Firebox refractory crack sealing (per panel) | $140 – $260 |
| Top plate / storm collar replacement | $260 – $520 |
| Ridge lock reseat at flue offset | $180 – $340 |
What moves the price is access. A DuraFlex insert in a tight masonry firebox in a Rice Military bungalow takes longer than a freestanding unit with open access in Katy. Gas line work adds cost if we need to pull a permit. Whatever the number is, you’ll see it written down before we start. Call (254) 978-7413 for an exact quote – estimates are free, and there’s no on-the-spot pressure to commit.
Why Houston Homeowners Call Kindling Chimney Houston for DuraFlex Work
DuraFlex is a good product, but it’s only as good as the last person who touched it. We work on it regularly enough that we know the failure patterns specific to this brand in Houston’s climate – and we don’t pretend every problem needs a new liner. When a repair calls for a material DuraFlex doesn’t make or stock locally, we also work with HeatShield and Gelco products, so you’re not stuck waiting on a backordered part. Every job gets a written price before work starts, clean floors before we leave, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise behind it. If it’s not done right, we make it right. That’s the whole agreement.
FAQs
Warranties are between you and DuraFlex or the original installer. As an independent DuraFlex service provider, we can’t file a DuraFlex warranty claim for you, but we can document the failure with photos and a written diagnostic that you can submit to the manufacturer or installer. That documentation has helped several Houston homeowners get partial parts coverage, especially on liner failures within the warranty window.
Common DuraFlex parts – thermocouples, damper plates, top plates, storm collars – we usually have on the truck or can source same-week through our local supply partners in Houston. Less common items, like specific DuraFlex gas valve assemblies, may take 5 to 10 business days. We’ll tell you the timeline before you pay for anything. Call (254) 978-7413 and we’ll check availability while you’re on the phone.
If the unit is under 12 years old and the repair is under $600, repair usually makes sense. If the firebox has multiple refractory panels cracked through, the liner has separated at more than one ridge lock, or the gas valve is failing, replacement may be the more honest call. We’ll show you photos of what we found and give you numbers for both paths so the decision is yours, not ours.
Most diagnostic visits lead to same-day repair for common issues like pilot lights, thermocouples, and damper plates. If we need a part that isn’t on the truck, we’ll book the return visit before we leave and you’ll have a written price already in hand. There’s no trip charge for the follow-up.
A pilot that won’t stay lit usually means the thermocouple is weak or the pilot tube is fouled, and the practical risk is low – the gas valve should shut off when the pilot drops out, and that’s the safety system doing its job. But don’t keep relighting it repeatedly, because each drop-out cycle puts wear on the valve. Get it looked at. Call (254) 978-7413 and we’ll get you a straight answer and a free estimate.
If your DuraFlex fireplace is acting up in Houston, we’ll tell you what we found, what it costs to fix, and what can safely wait. Call Kindling Chimney Houston at (254) 978-7413 for a free estimate – a real person answers, day or night.
